Evidence-based mindfulness for performance and exam anxiety
In short: Brief attention and breathing practices may help some people notice stress and return to the task. They are supportive skills, not a replacement for assessment or urgent care.
Use a small, repeatable practice
Try noticing the feet on the floor, naming a few sounds, and taking a slower exhale for one or two minutes. Practise at a calm time first, then decide whether it feels useful before an exam or performance.
Keep the context in view
Sleep, preparation, realistic scheduling, breaks, movement, and support from trusted people also matter. Mindfulness should not be used to dismiss severe anxiety, panic, depression, or safety concerns.
When to ask for help
If anxiety is persistent, worsening, or interfering with study and daily life, ask about an assessment. Explore evidence-informed therapy and student support information.
